As the "lifeline" of power transmission, cables have gradually become a major hidden danger to household safety due to their safety issues. Recently, the municipal fire and rescue detachment, in collaboration with the power department, launched a household cable safety popularization campaign to remind residents to be alert to risks such as cable aging and illegal use. "Many households have cables that are 'in service beyond their expiration date'. The service life of ordinary household cables is about 8-10 years. After exceeding this period, the insulation layer is prone to cracking, which may cause short circuits and electric leakage," said Li Lei, a power engineer, at the campaign site through physical demonstrations. Last year, there were 37 household fires in the city caused by cable aging, accounting for 28% of the total number of electrical fires. In addition to aging, illegal random wiring and overloaded use of cables are also common hazards. For example, plugging multiple high-power appliances into the same power strip will cause the cable temperature to rise sharply and accelerate the damage to the insulation layer. Regarding how to avoid risks, experts have put forward three suggestions: 1. Conduct regular inspections, focusing on checking whether socket and wire joints are blackened or overheated. Cables in humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms should be equipped with waterproof protective sleeves. 2. Use cables in a standardized manner: avoid heavy objects rolling over or excessive bending of cables, and high-power appliances should use dedicated cables and sockets independently. 3. Replace cables in a timely manner: when aging or damage is found in cables, new cables that meet national standards should be selected. It is better to have professional electricians perform the replacement to avoid hidden dangers caused by improper wiring. The campaign also distributed household cable safety manuals to residents, and free cable testing services will be provided in communities in the future. "Cable safety may seem like a trivial matter, but it is actually related to the safety of the whole family. We hope that through popularization, more people will pay attention to it and prevent safety accidents from details," said Zhang Min, head of the publicity section of the municipal fire and rescue detachment.
